cli-anything-drawio is a Claude Code skill that creates, updates, and exports draw.io architecture diagrams from the CLI for system designs, ADRs, and onboarding documentation.

About

cli-anything-drawio is a Python CLI harness from hkuds/cli-anything for controlling Draw.io from the terminal. Install via pip install cli-anything-drawio with Python 3.10+ and a system drawio binary; then run project new, interactive REPL mode, or export commands to produce diagram files for architecture reviews. Developers reach for cli-anything-drawio when they want version-controlled system diagrams, ADR figures, or onboarding visuals without opening the Draw.io desktop GUI for every edit. The skill documents basic commands—help, REPL, project creation with -o output paths—so agents can script diagram updates alongside code changes in CI or local workflows.

  • Diagram file generation
  • Shape and connector edits
  • Layered architecture views
  • Export to PNG or SVG
  • Versionable XML sources

How do you generate draw.io diagrams from the command line?

Create, update, and export draw.io architecture diagrams from CLI for system designs, ADRs, and onboarding documentation.

Who is it for?

Developers documenting system architecture who want scripted draw.io create, edit, and export from a Python 3.10+ CLI instead of manual GUI edits.

Skip if: Teams needing programmatic diagram generation without Draw.io installed or designers who only work in Figma or Excalidraw with no draw.io dependency.

When should I use this skill?

A developer asks to create, update, or export draw.io diagrams from CLI, generate architecture diagrams for ADRs, or automate diagram projects in terminal workflows.

What you get

Draw.io diagram project files and exported images produced via CLI commands for architecture docs, ADRs, and onboarding guides.

  • Draw.io project files
  • Exported diagram images

By the numbers

  • Requires Python 3.10+
  • Installed via pip install cli-anything-drawio
  • Depends on system drawio binary

# Create a new project
cli-anything-drawio project new -o project.json

# Run with JSON output (for agent consumption)
cli-anything-drawio --json project info -p project.json

REPL Mode

When invoked without a subcommand, the CLI enters an interactive REPL session:

cli-anything-drawio
# Enter commands interactively with tab-completion and history

Start an interactive session with undo/redo support.

cli-anything-drawio
# Enter commands interactively
# Use 'help' to see available commands
# Use 'undo' and 'redo' for history navigation

Export Project

Export the project to a final output format.

cli-anything-drawio --project myproject.json export render output.pdf --overwrite

State Management

The CLI maintains session state with:

  • Undo/Redo: Up to 50 levels of history
  • Project persistence: Save/load project state as JSON
  • Session tracking: Track modifications and changes

Output Formats

All commands support dual output modes:

  • Human-readable (default): Tables, colors, formatted text
  • Machine-readable (--json flag): Structured JSON for agent consumption
# Human output
cli-anything-drawio project info -p project.json

# JSON output for agents
cli-anything-drawio --json project info -p project.json

For AI Agents

When using this CLI programmatically:

1. Always use `--json` flag for parseable output 2. Check return codes - 0 for success, non-zero for errors 3. Parse stderr for error messages on failure 4. Use absolute paths for all file operations 5. Verify outputs exist after export operations

How it compares

Choose cli-anything-drawio over GUI-only Draw.io when diagrams must be created or exported from scripts, REPL sessions, or CI-adjacent terminal workflows.

FAQ

How do you install cli-anything-drawio?

cli-anything-drawio installs with pip install cli-anything-drawio on Python 3.10 or newer. The host machine must also have drawio installed because the CLI harness shells out to the Draw.io tooling for create, edit, and export operations.

What can cli-anything-drawio do from the terminal?

cli-anything-drawio exposes help, interactive REPL mode, and project new with -o output paths to create and export Draw.io diagrams. Developers use it for architecture diagrams, ADRs, and onboarding documentation without manual GUI-only edits.

What prerequisites does cli-anything-drawio require?

cli-anything-drawio requires Python 3.10+ and a system drawio installation. Without the drawio binary, the CLI cannot render or export diagram files even after the pip package installs successfully.
